Essay #21 Friendship

Friendship
Dear reader,
This essay of mine is meant to stimulate multiple genres of writing. This multi-genre essay is made to explain what friendship means to me. Please read the following with care and an open and deep consideration for what it means.

Expository paragraph:
Friendship takes its twists and turns, sometimes ending up in better shape than before. Sometimes not(purposeful sentence fragment). I have multiple friends that follow this pattern. I won’t mention any names, but some days I feel this friend is my best friend, and other days this friend doesn’t want to be anywhere near me. I never really know if he is my friend or not. Some friends that I have follow this pattern in larger periods of time. For example, I used to be friends with some people a year ago, but have lost touch with them since. This is because friendship follows its patterns of ups and downs. Through this pattern, we are able to find who our true friends are by who we keep as friends.

Haiku:
They were always friends,
Forgot about each other.
Never talked again

Picture poem:

Look at these gentleman.
They’ve most likely been friends for decades.
They’ve taken and passed the friendship test.
Now they just have to keep in touch.
This friendship is a friendship that is only given at an older age.
It doesn’t matter to these two if the other is republican or democrat,
which is sometimes a real problem in friendships of adults,
or black or white, they just have fun together.
They most likely can't remember where they met,
or how for that matter!
I imagine both of them sitting on the stage of a bar,
playing jazz and entertaining hundreds of people.
These people are out at the bar with their friends.
I see two young friends asking the two older gentleman to take a picture with them.
All four of them smile a wide and photogenic smile, and snap the photo.
This photo will be kept, to remind both pairs of friends that they know how to have a good time.

Free verse(about Romeo and Juliet)

Oh Juliet,
you tease your new boyfriend.
Isn't that a good idea?
Keep him interested while you add years onto your grand total.
Smart idea!
Your mother did set an example as a young one,
but thats okay.
You seem to be making the right decision.
Yet look at you! You're a beautiful young woman who was born from a young womb.
Doesn't that make it possible that your child will be the same way?
I mean, if a mother is beautiful, her daughter will most likely be the same.
Not to worry Juliet, you have a handle on the situation.
You are keeping "the worm" out of your "bud".
Though your decisions may upset Romeo, he will accept it, because he loves you.

Self Assessment:

This essay was AWESOME! especially the freestyle poem. I don't know what it was about it, but I had a lot of fun writing it. I felt like I repeated quite a few things in the picture poem and in the freestyle poem, but I usually have a lot of trouble doing this, and it is still something I am working on.

Essay #20 Family

Cooper Feltes
English 8
Mr. Salsich
April 20, 2010
Parents:
The Relationship between Parents and Children

Parents are very important in the growing process of a child. Parents can support their child through emotional struggles, or just spend a lot of time with them. Parents can also let their child find their own way through life with very little support. My parents have chosen the first tactic, and have been a large influence to my life.

Compared to some other parents, my parents treat me with a lot more respect. To get that honor from my parents, I must honor them. For example, every time they ask me to do something, I do it. This kind of accountability and trust is crucial to a reasonable and respectful relationship (alliteration) with my parents. Though my parents are separated, they both need my help, and I am happy to graciously (apt thesaurus word) assist them. Though I have much more of a chore work load at my father’s house, I try to pitch in the same amount at each home. This allows for a more admirable family coherence. In return for my work, my parents pay me with love. Each of my parents constantly reminds me how much they love me and how obedient I am. It is known in my family that love is omnipresent, and that good deeds completed honorably will lead to nothing but good. I love my parents for they treat me with respect, and therefore, I must treat them the same way.

I believe that the presence of a well nurtured father- child relationship is obvious, or absent in the books that we have read in English class. Atticus from To Kill a Mockingbird and my father deeply respect all other people. For instance, Atticus never forgets to kindly tip his hat to a lady or to comment on their
exquisite (apt thesaurus word) flowers. My dad is similar, although in a more whacky way. (Extra commentary) He is always a thoughtful gentleman, yet he tends to make more jokes and "play with his words", as he likes to say, more than Atticus ever did. Atticus and my father are very hard workers, intelligent learners, and playful fathers (parallelism). Though they spend much of their time at the office, they make plenty of time for their children. Both Atticus and my father are playful fathers, doing activities and playing games with their kids in their spare time. This father-child relationship does not seem to be apparent in Romeo and Juliet. In the play, the fathers of any of the main characters have only been mentioned around twice. The friendly children of the story seem to be very independent and the boys especially are out of their parents influence, running free all day and only reporting to their homes for meals (Loose Sentence). (Extra commentary) Juliet, however, is influenced by her father to marry a man she is not interested in. The loving fathers of these two books, as well as my father, have made a major impact on their children in one way or another.

Parents have an option of how to raise their child. They can be very loving and supportive of their child, or they can let them be independent, discovering the world on their own. Both tactics have their benefits and their disadvantages. From To Kill a Mockingbird and Romeo and Juliet, we can see that either way, the child can grow to be a proper man or woman.

---------------------------------------------
Self-assessment,

This paragraph was fun for me to write. I really got to examine how the characters in the book develop through their childhood through the help of their parents. The very last sentence of the essay was the absolute trickiest sentence to form. I might have been able to make this sentence clearer. I love the adjectives and the “bell words” I used in this essay. It is a definite strong point I see. I need to learn to spot little mistakes better than I have in the past. These mistakes affect my grade, which I have chosen to be:

Essay #19 Fix You

Cooper Feltes
English 8

April 8, 2010

"Fix You"

The song "Fix You" by Coldplay Is a great song. Because the lyrics relate to my life and the life of Romeo in Romeo and Juliet, this song really means a lot to me. Though this song touches upon sad topics, I can find times in my life when the lyrics of this song make perfect sense. "Fix You" fits in perfectly to my life and in Romeo and Juliet.

Name: "Fix you"/ Time: (4:55)/ Artist: Coldplay/ Album: X&Y/ Genre: Alternative/ Play Count: 11; No it's not my favorite song, but it means more to me than any other song in the world. Starting off with an organ playing, Chris Martin says," When you try your best but you don't succeed, when you get what you want but not what you need. When you feel so tired but you can't sleep, stuck in reverse". These lyrics embraced (thesaurus word) me when I first heard them. I often do find myself yawning and lying in bed, but not falling asleep, or trying so hard on a quiz and getting a C+. Similarly, When I "loose somethin' [I] can't replace", I can't stop thinking about the things I have lost, such as missed opportunities. Martin goes on about things that make both him and I sad. In another song of his, he says "curse missed opportunities", which is something I do everyday. "The tears stream down my face" when possessions are lost, never to be replaced. These thing are set aside in my mind when he finishes the song with "lights will guide you home, and ignite your bones, and I will try... to fix you".

“Fix You” definitely relates to Romeo and Juliet. First of all, the emotional side of the song relates to Romeo.  On page 19, when Benvolio is talking to Romeo's father, he says that Romeo has become become moody and emotional. I would bet that Romeo would much like the song I have picked out for it's relations to his life. On page 21, Romeo is again describing his feelings by exclaiming opposites like, “O heavy lightness” or “cold fire, sick health”. Though the song doesn’t exactly exclaim opposites,  it does mention things that make a person hurt, a feeling that is felt almost every day. Romeo is feeling things like, “los[ing] something [he] can’t replace” or “lov[ing] someone but it goes to waste”. It seems to me that this song just might have been one of Romeo’s favorite songs, had it been released in his time.

Romeo, living in the 1500's, unfortunately, never experienced this song. If he had, I imagine he would get the same feeling I do, a feeling of love. I imagine he would get a feeling of anguish, or sorrow, and I imagine he and I would have a similar experience if we listen to "Fix You" together (tricolon). "Fix You" makes me feel more emotions at a single moment in time than any other song I know of.

---------------------------------------
Self-assessment

This essay was a very emotional essay for me to write. I must have listened to the song over and over again around eight times until I could finish the first body paragraph. I am still working on writing in a more formal manner. in multiple areas of this essay especially, I see points where it sounds like I am informally talking to myself. I do, however, like all the quotes and the amount of emotion I put into it. I could have incorporated my quotes into the sentences more, rather than using them as their own sentence. Self grade=B+

Forgiveness is something every Human needs, and every person can give. However, if a person intends or succeeds to end a life purposefully, much like Bob Ewell did in To Kill a Mockingbird, they should not be forgiven. In the book, Bob Ewell sneaks up on Atticus' two children and attempts to attack them and kill them, yet he fails when Boo Radley saves the children and kills Bob Ewell in self defense. My life and To Kill a Mockingbird have people in them that need forgiveness.

In To Kill a Mockingbird, the Ewell family has done many bad things that are seemingly unforgivable. The actions of Mayella Ewell, namely her lying in court and accusing Tom Robinson of something he didn't do, however, are forgivable. Mayella knew that if she didn't do her best to defend her side of the case, her father would take her home and beat her. If she did the right thing, there would be consequences. The actions of Bob Ewell, unlike Mayella, are unforgivable. I cannot think of one reason that anyone would ever think of forgiving him. It is questionable why he would even want Tom in jail, yet in the end, Bob lost his own life for nothing, leaving trails of hate for his children to inherit. Bob also committed another crime after he won his case. On their way home from a pageant, Scout and Jem were attacked by Bob. This just adds one more thing not to forgive him for. I can understand why Mayella made the mistake of lying in court, but Bob's actions are unforgivable.

Everyone in the world needs forgiveness. The beauty of that fact is that everyone in the world can give it as well. It is uncommon that a person does something so horrific, so abominable, so appalling(thesaurus words and tricolon),  that it is impossible to forgive it. It must be accepted that things must be forgiven. If things weren’t forgiven, there would be an endless stream of grudges. I know from experience that grudges are hard to keep up. They take so much energy that after a while, a person gets tired and forgets. When I have done something wrong that is scolded, I tend to kick myself for it for months. I try to remember that if I can forgive and forget, then so can they. this helps me remember that they probably have forgotten about the indecent, and so should I. Forgiveness is something everyone can give, and something everyone needs.

Forgive and Forget is a motto many people live by, yet only the kindest of hearts can truly achieve it. Though the kindes of hearts can forgive most things, murder, or at least an attempt at it, is unforgivable. As big a crime as murder is, most people never forget about their own mistakes. I try to forgive myself and forget my mistakes, for I believe that that will make me a better person

Self-Assessment_____________________________________________________________________
I really did enjoy this essay. I loved writing about something I can relate to and something that I experience in everyday life. I really think I could have used more thesaurus words. When I saw how many words other students used, I realized how few I really used. I suppose I could get better at making stronger opening and closing sentences.  I would give this essay a solid B+

Self assessment,

This entire essay took a lot of time to write. One sentence in particualar took about 10 minutes to write. This sentence was the final sentence of the essay. I ended up using part of the last sentence from the last body paragraph. I had a lot of errors and mistakes in the special requirements. These, thankfully, were fixed. I thought that the second body paragraph was the best part of my essay. It had many quotes which supported the main theme. I think the closing sentence of all paragraphs could be enhanced. These sentences seem to be the most challenging.

Essay #16

Forgotten

Dear reader,
This essay of mine is meant to stimulate multiple genres of writing. Our recent readings of To Kill a Mockingbird are the topic in the first paragraph, and the others are to explain what forgotten means to me. Please read the following with care and an open and deep consideration for what it means.

Letter:
Mr. Ewell,
You are gone, but both of us be damned if you are forgotten. Oh yea, remember that day when you promised to "get me", Hah, you failed. The only life you took was your own, but if you hadn't killed yourself, we wouldn't be seeing you free for a long time. You've kept too many secrets to your grave Bob, and you were your only true defender. Racism beats common sense in this world, and common sense seems to elude you. Good riddens, yet both your and my children will suffer. You are gone, but we won’t forget your sins.

Poem:
Yes you did forget them,
Your car keys in the house,
Or maybe just to sow
The hole that’s in your blouse.
You forget to feed the cat,
Or go to wash the car;
Forgetting things like this,
Won’t draw you back so far,
But when you blank on big things
Like a child’s birthday gift,
It won’t be forgotten,
his birthday that you missed.
Keep things that matter close,
and play them in your mind,
For next time you forget,
Your friendship will go blind.

Picture poem:

Here, mother nature sees who is paying attention to the world. Though she knows the tree must be spotted sometime by someone, or something, she realizes that the only ones who can see it, are the ones that would have the heart to figure out where it belongs, for she knows the shallow heart sees only what is there, blind to what could be. For now the tree lays there, hopefully noticed by some, if not all, longed for by it's forest friends back home. When the opportunity arises, the tree will be plucked out of the water and sent to the hills for even the shallow hearted to behold, instead of the scarce audience attracted to it's watery soil, for it deserves to be seen by all. All those who saw it in nature's testing grounds, now see it for what it could be once again. A tree.

Haiku:

He's out of his place;
not among the other kids.
He likes it this way.

Expository Paragraph:

It's not uncommon for the average person to feel unwanted or forgotten. It happens to some more than others, and varies dramatically from person to person. For example, when I feel forgotten, though this feeling is uncommon, I think of why. Usually, when people push me out of their minds, I'm pushing them out of my mind. Though it is uncommon for me to feel forgotten, I forget people all the time. Because of this, I know that, although It is uncommon for me to feel so,  I know I am forgotten. However, next time we encounter, I will remember them, and they will remember me; two people who forgot about each other, until the thoughts of each other's presence enter our minds. forgotten is a temporary state of mind.

Cooper's Assessment essay

Cooper Feltes
February 9, 2010

Alliance for Living:
Interaction With Others and Encouragement to Grow.

At Alliance for Living, an organization that helps people around south-eastern Connecticut with HIV/AIDS, I helped to feed people in need, brought smiles to faces, and grew as a person. Besides helping others, I had a lot of fun volunteering. During my visits, I benefited the organization, and benefited my experience bank as well. If I were to do this project again, Alliance for living would be the top of my list for many reasons.

I had to choose Alliance for Living because of all the differences from the other organizations. To me, working with people who have a life changing disease seemed more important than working at a homeless shelter. Having finished the project, it feels more accomplishing to me than I think it would if I had volunteered at a homeless shelter, like many of my classmates did. It is also a time in my life I will remember more clearly. It is surprising to me that I kept with this site after the first visit. When I walked in, after getting used to the unusual smell of the building, I was greeted by a staff of paid workers and volunteers. After my first visit, “I really [felt] like I had found a second family to join and work with” (visit #1journal)). Thinking about it afterwards, there is a big difference between what my classmates feel about the project and what I feel. At homeless shelters, animal shelters, and nursing homes, people and animals are there for a variety of different reasons. At Alliance for Living, however, the members are all there for the same reason. They have HIV/AIDS.

One of the main challenges of volunteering at AFL (Alliance for Living) was being social. An example of one of my social challenges was during a single visit. I walked in, and a man was sitting at the dining table. He did not say a word, “did not look over to see who was coming, and didn't even acknowledge my presence in the room (visit #4 journal)”. It was extremely strange and socially awkward. Another example of a social challenge was getting used to greeting people that I knew had AIDS. I got used to it though, knowing that it wasn’t contagious through everyday physical contact. They were after all “normal people (visit #2 journal)”. My last social challenge was talking and communicating with other volunteers and staff with ease. An example of this is sitting around a table, surrounded by people who identified themselves through conversation topic as homosexuals. In the dining room I sat in on a “bountiful and informal” (and extremely awkward) “conversation about homosexuality (visit #5 journal). These social challenges were surpassed by the last visit, and I know the things I learned will help me in the future

I know I put good into the minds and hearts of the volunteers and members. The volunteers were especially receptive of my positive attitude. An example of this is when Slim, a paid worker “asked me how old I was, I responded confidently with, ‘13’ and he just put his hand on his forehead in non-belief” (journal #3). For the rest of my visits, he brought up the topic of my age with a smile. I also brought joy to the members. The first few visits at least, I was at the reception desk, giving warm smiles and a welcoming “hello” whenever a member walked in. On Wednesdays, my positive attitude spread to the dining room, as I cheerfully gathered groceries for members.. Anyone who volunteers anywhere is helping the community. At AFL, we give a grocery to people with AIDS for no cost at all, which always brings a smile to their face. We also help members who have no home to find one that is fitting and affordable. Joy is a trademark at AFL.

During my time at AFL, I learned loads about HIV/AIDS. When I saw so many people with the disease in the same place at one time, I realized how staggering the statistics were in our state alone. I learned that Connecticut is one of the top ten states when it comes to amount of people infected with AIDS (AFL website). 21 people per 100,000 people in Connecticut are infected with HIV/AIDS, whereas the average for the U.S. is around 15 per 100,000 people(AFL website). Statistics are startling on a national scale as well. The U.S. alone has had around 1,051,875 people infected since the disease was first diagnosed in the country in 1981(CDC centers for disease control/prevention). Since then, 583,298 have died from causes related to HIV/AIDS. Outside of the United States, HIV/AIDS has spread much more wildly. Around 33 million people are living with HIV, and millions are living with it but don’t know it (Standard Chartered Bank AIDS education). It is estimated that there are 6,800 new infections every day, of which 15-24 year olds account for 45%. Statistics like these make me shiver in my seat.

It took a long time to find relations to AIDS or AFL in To Kill a Mockingbird. One example I found is the basket that was left on Atticus’s kitchen table filled with “hunks of slat pork, tomatoes, beans and even scuppernongs (Lee, 286)”. This reminded me of the resilience of the townspeople, much like the resilience of people with the disease. Even though they were poor, they found a way to give what they had, showing a deep respect, and moving on with their lives. The incident also reminds me of the disease’s effects on people. It makes people sick, but, like the townspeople, they find a way to live and contribute to society. The townspeople are poor, but they find a way to pull through. The Ewells live with so many lies. This reminds me of people that know they have the disease, but deny it, and then give the disease to their partner. Keeping that secret from your partner so they don’t leave you is very shallow to me, much like the Ewells are. Some people have no consideration of others, and use that characteristic to infect others with the disease. A deep mind was required to uncover these relations.

One thing I could have done differently during my visits was to be more social. Being more social with the members was the main thing I could have worked on .It would have been great to get a couple of stories from the members to make things more interesting for me. It also would have made the members feel more at home. I also could have worked together a little more with the other volunteers. At the beginning it felt really awkward to do so. I got more comfortable after a while, but I didn’t take advantage of my opportunities to start a conversation. I also could have had the courage to ask to do more so I wouldn’t have been “sitting at the reception desk (journal #3)” all day. It would have made my experience a little more rich. It also would have made it a little more fun and much more memorable. Sitting at reception, talking around a table, or helping to fill groceries, I am happy with what I did, and I’m sure they appreciated my help (Periodic sentence).

Going to AFL changed me as a person, and as a student. In our little city, there are more people with HIV than I was ever aware of. Many more people are in need than I expected as well. Seeing so many people in need of help was very surprising and startling. Before meeting people I knew had AIDS, the suffering of the people infected was almost invisible to me. You won’t be able to tell on the street, but there’s a good chance that you walk by someone with AIDS almost every week, or even every day. The vision of seeing the people who suffer in a concentrated space changed me. Another thing that helped me understand the disease was a man from CareNet pregnancy resource center. When he visited us during health classes, he presented the class with some startling facts about STDs. He visited us in the midst of the project, which was absolutely perfect timing. All the information and situations presented to me changed me as a person.

Over the past few weeks, I have experienced a lot. Alliance for Living has encouraged me to grow as a person, and shown me how to interact with strangers. It has shown me how to grow as a student as well, encouraging me to share my experiences and use them in a helpful way. This assessment project has been an overall benefit to my educational growth, and my growth as a human being.

AFL visit #6

Cooper Feltes
2/5/09

Today was another Wednesday, which meant I was helping with groceries again. While sitting and waiting for some members to come in the dining room door, I saw some familiar faces. For instance, I saw the blind man again. This time though, I walked in and he must have recognized my voice, because he said "hello" and started acting very friendly. Though that face was new, unfamiliar faces popped up. another person who was there looked extremely old with wrinkled skin and hands bombarded with vanes. She was in a neck brace, and her chin was at least one inch longer than it should have been. This visit was normal, but observations I made spiced it up a little.

Essay #13 Rebellion

Cooper Feltes
English 8
Mr. Salsich
January 27/2010
Rebellion:
The Growth of Rebellion in My Life and in To Kill a Mockingbird.

In most cases, the developing child shows signs of rebellion at some point of his or her life. In To Kill a Mockingbird Scout seems to be expressing signs of potential rebellion collecting inside her bank of emotions.

At Scout's age, it is normal for a girl  to start to find her place and decide what she wants to become. In Scout's environment, the constant gravitational pull of adult expectations are causing her to make her own decisions. On one hand, Atticus doesn't expect much of her, and Scout knows that whatever she does, her father will be happy with. On the other hand, Aunt Alexandria expects a little too much of her, requiring Scout to become a true lady. An instance of the most rebellious action possible, is part of Dill's story, starting from running away from home, and ending up In Maycomb (Loose sentence). Because he thought his family didn't love him, he came to the Finch household. Dill was offered to spend the night, and the Finch's love seemed to rub off on Dill until his rebellious attitude got the best of him, and he broke out in tears in the court room. Scout and Dill have shown signs of rebellion, or at least are exposed to it's dangers.

Looking at my life as it is today, I sense rebellious emotions forming (suspentence). The seed of this rebellion was sewn at my own home. My parents have raised me to be 99.99% obedient, so much so, that I can't remember any time where I said "no" to one of my parents requests. I think my childhood compliance is coming back to bite my parents as I grow ever aware of how much I force myself to do. Especially in the past couple of months, I have been feeling restricted and bound up by adults. If they were out of the way, hypothetically, I could be unrestrained and totally free. Yet my parents probably felt the same way I do when they were kids, and my children will feel the same way when they're in my shoes. This rebellion is normal for any teenage boy I suppose.

Scout and I are growing up, and like many children, we are creating rebellion to deposit in our emotional banks. Because we are both growing up, Scout will always remain a special character in my mind.

Self Assessment:

This essay was relatively easy for me. It was a challenge to figure out whether my ease came from my connection to the topic, or numerous overlooked mistakes. like my last essay, I streamlined a lot of sentences to make them easier for the reader to read. I had a lot of trouble finding another word for rebellion that easily fit into the sentence.

essay #12 Morning time.

Cooper
English 8

Morning Time:
Pleasures of a Brand New Day.

When bedtime comes around, the last thing anyone wants to be is angry. After a full night of rest, a fresh morning start recharges your batteries and positively sets your mood. At least, this is the case in To Kill a Mockingbird, after Atticus loses one of his bigger court cases. After he rests, he hides the entire event and acts like his attitude is back to normal.
TS No matter what happens during the day, "things are always better in the morning". SD  In To Kill a Mockingbird, anger at bedtime never lasts for long. CM Right after Atticus decides to go upstairs to bed early because he lost his court case, Scout narrates,"thing are always better in the morning". CM This statement holds true as she continues to describe the next morning as a calm and peaceful one. SD It seems to be the same a few days later when Aunt Alexandria yells at Scout, telling her she's "enough of a problem to [her] father as it is". CM Sobbing, Scout runs upstairs into Jem's room when the shouting subsides. CM After Jem, feeling and sharing Scout's pain, comforts her and tells her its going to be okay, she goes to bed(Participle S-V split), then wakes up in the morning back to normal. SD A while back in the book, we saw the Finch family having a holiday dinner together. CM When Scout goes outside, she talks to her cousin Francis and after a while, their conversation leads to Francis sprinting towards the kitchen and calling Atticus "nothing but a nigger-lover". CM This comment brought Scout to the brink, but when she got home, she went to bed and tried to forget about it the next morning. CS Any problem can be solved over a night of sleep.

Even after the worst day ever, a good night's sleep in clean, crisp sheets can rejuvenate the most shrouded of minds. Anger is, in my morning, the last of the emotions felt. Scout must feel like this all the time. When a major event in the story affects Scout, she is devastated. The emotional ruins are forgotten until later in the day, they are found, to be fixed again by another night of sleep.

This entire essay took a lot of time for me. Thinking of the third supporting detail was very challenging. I picked a random chapter, and was fortunate enough to find the third supporting detail in chapter 9. the most significant difference between my two drafts was the streamlining of a couple of sentences including the first supporting detail. I think the most pleasing phrase is the first sentence of the concluding paragraph because it is very descriptive and was calming to write. although i dont know how I could fix this, I thought I repeated "good night's sleep" too many times. I tried to vary the delivery of it, but I quickly ran out of ideas.

Today was a great day, and to cap it off, it was a very colorful day at AFL. Instead of having to sit at the reception desk the entire time, I was able to fill a few orders of groceries. Before that started I was engaging in something very peculiar to me. sitting at the dining table was a man. This man, when I walked in, did not say a word, did not look over to see who was coming, and didn't even acknowledge my presence in the room. It was extremely strange. I saw next to him a folded up metal stick with a ball at the end of it. He was blind. When the other volunteers walked in laughing, he was quick to ask them how they were doing. When a woman said hello while walking in to get groceries, I know his ears perked up. She continued talking, until the man started a conversation with her. I picked up the vibe that she had never met him formally, but he said he recognized her voice. This amazed me. I had never thought of speech as a main source of recognition before today. The man had developed an acute sense of hearing through his visual disabilities. Today's events really strengthened my appreciation for people with major and minor disabilities.

Although it wasn't such a great visit, I enjoyed what I was able to do. Today, I finally mastered filling people's grocery orders. I've almost memorized the location of foods in the pantry. The only thing I couldn't find was the Chef Boyardee which ended up being hidden under the beef stew. In the dining room, I sat in on a bountiful and informal conversation about homosexuality (because AIDS affects homosexuals more than anyone else, I feel I can talk about this without being too akward). Thankfully, After being barraged with a volley of inapropriate comments and jokes, a member came in and I had to fill their grocery order. the fact they didnt feel discouraged by my presence made me feel closer to the family I had joined a few weeks earlier.

Essay # 11 personality

Essay #11
Cooper Feltes
Mr. Salsich
English 8
January 13. 2010

Personality:

A View Upon How Personality is Very Important In my Life and in To Kill a Mockingbird

Throughout the day, the personalities of others effect our own attitude. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Jem's attitude seems to be rubbing off on Scout. His silence has given Scout one less person to talk to, leaving Dill as her only companion. Jem has unknowingly set the mood in chapters 20 and 21 by keeping quiet. However, Dill disturbed the silence by bursting out in tears in the middle of the courtroom. Scout is then persuaded to follow the trends of Dill’s attitude. Dill's sadness infects Scout and unveils her sympathetic side. Meeting Mr Raymond changed their state of mind as well. Mr. Raymond's sudden appearance startled Scout and changed her attitude from sympathetic to a suspicious mindset. They were startled for one, but Scout wasn’t so sure her dad, who wasn't wery fond of Mr. Raymond, would approve of his presence. Throughout the chapters, Scout and other characters have changed to conform to the personality of others.

My personality has changed over the years, and people seem to recognize it. My Mr. Enthusiastic trademark has worn off, yet my peers and I sense another looming attitude: Efficiency. Efficiency is my "middle name" in everything I do. If I can cut off a few minutes from an activity, I am the happiest boy in the world. The thought of inefficiency "grinds my gears". When I comment about a less time consuming, more precise, or more cost effective way of doing things, people take note. In math class one day, for example, I discovered I had finished the homework in class, and the person sitting across from me, who was an excellent math student, hadn't even broken the half-way point. After he commented on my brutal efficiency, he pointed out I sometimes become too efficient. He reminded me of our science worksheet earlier that week. Trying my best to finish before class ended, I completed the assignment in 10 minutes, but when we checked our answers, I got almost half of them wrong, and ended up having to do it over again for homework. I learned my lesson. Efficiency is an equal balance of time, effort, and quality, and before I can acheive it, there must be a balance between all three of these factors. From my point of view, there is always room for improvement. Whether I'm playing a game or doing schoolwork, I am monitoring what level of energy I put in, and the quality of the work. Efficiency is a feature of my personality that rubs off on people, and it makes each day a little happier for people around me.

AFL visit #3

Visit 3
January 6, 2010

Wednesday is definitely the busiest day at AFL. When I first arrived I was greeted by a tall man named "Slim" that showed me how to fill orders made by members. Besides finding for members without them, AFL offers groceries on Wednesday for them when their income doesn't compensate. "Slim" brought me down the old, gated elevator and into the basement where the pantry was located, walked me around, and showed me how to fill grocery orders requested by the member. The rest of my visit was very unfulfilling. For one and a half hours I sat at the reception desk trying to figure out how to transfer calls to voicemail correctly. One member I saw was a character I would like to take note of here. This woman was one I met right in front the elavator, and the first thing I noticed was her blue lipstick, her makeup blended face, and her denying of being able to write her own name. Thinking of it now, I see what a well educated world I am surrounded by. In our own world, there are millions of people that cant write, or even read their own name. Taking into consideration that there is a world outside of my life, I know now all the challenges people face everyday adapting to the modern world.

Today was nothing like my last visit. for two and a half ours i sat at the front desk of the building, acting as receptionist. Of course, it was a Monday, and nothing special ever happens on a Monday. I did, however, get to use the paper shedder, which was awsome. I really didn't leave that one room for the entire visit. I didn't get to see much of the staff. actually, I think only 4 out of 15 of the staff were there. It was quite embarrasing when I got a call from a gentleman and i couldn't understand a word he was saying. To add to this, he made random pauses in the middle of his sentences which got confusing. I suppose this was "another day at the office".

At the Alliance for Living(AFL) in New London, there was a defined family I had been invited to join. Upon entering, I was greeted by multiple volunteers and employees to guide me through the facility. After completing my tour, i had the opportunity to walk through the kitchen, where two volunteers were cooking up a meal for members of AFL. What really surprised me was how comfortable I felt in the group's presence. After the tour, we went into the dining hall, and I was offered a meal! Since very few members showed up to eat, the workers generously offered me a bit of turkey and stuffing. One of the volunteers i would like to describe is a jubilant character from California. She (in the conversation around the dinner table) called herself a "California hippie" after explaining her love of children with names such as "Sunshine" and "Moonglow". She was one of the dinner cooks and her extreme kindness brightened up my evening. After my first visit, I really felt like I had found a second family to join and work with.

Motivation:
Motivation Inside Us

Motivation thrives inside all of us. One specific example of this can be found in the heart of NFL quarterback Drew Brees .Drew Brees has helped around the world to bring hope to ravaged citizens, especially in New Orleans, where Todd Durkin, his personal trainer, said," Drew Brees is a microcosm of that city- what his comeback from surgery represents... No one beleived he'd be able to come back from that injury. New orleans is the same way, the underdog no one beleived could come back"(Jim Corbett). His experiences from around the world inspire his very motivational pep-talks to his palyers before his football games. This hidden motivation can especially be found inside of scholars. The work quality of students varies highly depending on the environment he or she is exposed to ( Eric Jensen, 260). For example, when a student can choose his/her topic in which they learn about, their motivation to learn about the topic increases. Also, dreams can easily effect motivation. Subconsious dreams and thoughts can alter moods and goals unknowingly during the day ( J. Weightman). following such conduct, if you hold negative feelings toward a teacher, you are more likely to do worse in their class. Creating an optimum environment for motivation is crutial to bring out sucess in the world.

essay#10 rooster

Metaphor:

An Essay to Explain Metaphors

We all have analogies for what we're feeling. One hour, we could feel like a flower, yet another, we could feel like a rock. Different events change our thoughts, and our moods seem to act accordingly. Finding a day where one emotion conquerers the entire day is rare.

In To Kill a Mockingbird, Bob Ewell is referred to multiple times as a "little red rooster". giving the circumstances of the court, this could mean that his face is red like a rooster. This could be implying that he is lying and he has trouble hiding it.  I've never heard this statement before, but Mr. Ewell's possible lies could be compared to a "red rooster". Mr. Ewell could also be called this because he was embarrassed. I always get a red face when I get embarrassed. It is no surprise that he would be embarrassed about his illiterate education exposed by Atticus. Mr. Ewell is really holding up against Attucus' verbal attacks, but really needs to get himself out of the hole of lies he created.

If I was required to think up a metaphor  to describe me, I would probably say a lamp surrounded  by a lampshade. I would say this because of the virtual barrier of my mind. The lampshade, much like it's effect on a lamp, dampens the ideas my brain emit. Although it smooths out the "light" to make it more acceptable, if it weren't there, the "light" might be to bright, like a bare light bulb. What this "lampshade" on my mind could be is a mystery. It could be an inability to smoothly transmit my ideas verbally, or the social barrier that shoots down new ideas all the time. Whatever it is, it holds many of my thoughts inside and keeps them from leaving. This "lampshade" is one of the strongest barriers around, but, then again, everything has a weakness

Weather I am a lamp or Mr. Ewell is a "red little rooster", there is always reasoning behind it. My thoughts and my feelings create the aurora (or "lampshade") that mulls the sharoness of my mind. Mr. Ewell, however, hasn't had his own opinion in his description. Creating names(in Mr. Ewell's case), seems as though its easy and clever, but can receive hurtful cynicism from the unexpected viewer.
